The “Infiorata” in Genzano (this year date on 16/17/18 June) is historically linked to the religious celebration of Corpus Christi. The origins of this festival date back to the thirteenth century when, on occasion of the processions, petals were scattered profusely.
In 1625, in the Vatican Basilica, began the tradition of decorating the floor of the church with flowers arranged in a mosaic. This custom spread in many catholic countries. Because of the width and slope of the uphill road which hosts the floral carpet, the one in Genzano is renowned for its beauty and scenography. Throughout the centuries this fest has grown from local folk festival to an international event of art and culture.
The festival, nowadays spread over two weeks, hosts several cultural events: concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances, handcrafts stands, fashion shows.
A growing of events leads to the heart of the festival which begins in the second week on Friday morning, inside the courtyard of city hall with the preparation of the petals which are lovingly preserved in the caves.
The highlights moment of the festival are the following:
Friday at 8 p.m. the volunteers start to designe drawings on the ground.
Saturday at 8 in the night they start laying the petals on the ground. Some flower masters work all the night to make the floral carpet ready for Sunday Morning.
Sunday Morning, at 10,00 o’clock, the major gives his welcome to the visitors.
All day Sunday visitors can enjoy the show of the carpet, and also they can enjoy guided tours to Sforza-Cesarini palace and park overlooking the Nemi lake.
Sunday, at 7 p.m., solemn mass ad at 8 p.m. solemn procession of Corpus Christi.
On Monday you can still enjoy the visit of the carpet and at 5 p.m. the spectacular parade in historical costumes.
