THE TOUR OF A DAY MAKES ALMOST ALL EMBRACE THE CASTELLI ROMANI

FIRST ITINERARY: Castel Gandolfo – Rocca di Papa – Frascati – Grottaferrata – Marino – Albano – Ariccia – Genzano – Nemi
After a breakfast under the papal blessing at the small table sat in one of the most beautiful pedestrian squares of all the Castelli Romani, we leave for Rocca di Papa, 753 meters s.l.m., breathtaking. The tour continues with a view to Frascati and his beautiful main square overlooking Rome and Villa Aldobrandini. And then a scheduled stop in Grottaferrata with its fortified abbey. Leaving Grottaferrata turning around the fort to better admire it, we’ll head to Marino, still one of the most picturesque and rooted in the tradition of the Castelli Romani. We stop for lunch. In the afternoon we will go to Albano, “The Mother of Rome” that alone, for its wealth of archaeological evidence, is worthy of a weekend. We will try to focus on the most beautiful and interesting and we’ll continue to Ariccia, where the square designed by Bernini awaits us in all its magnificence. We proceed for Genzano, famous for the bread that has obtained the PGI and then we head to Nemi, where we’ll enjoy the walk inside the small town, admire the second lake known as “the mirror of Diana”, walking around the course enjoying the beautiful craft shops that face it and take a break to taste the famous strawberries of Nemi. Along a splendid road through the woods on the way back there you restart again by turning around Lake Albano while the night falls and the plain of Rome is lit up… do not miss the views.

SECOND ITINERARY: Rocca di Papa – Nemi – Lanuvio – Genzano – Ariccia – Albano – Castel Gandolfo – Grottaferrata – Frascati
From Rocca di Papa, which is the country that better represents the meaning of “entrenchment” of the Castelli Romani, we can get an idea of how the Latium Volcano has shaped up to make this area what is now. Then we head down towards Nemi, where we’ll allow ourselves a brief walk along the main street until we get behind the Palazzo Ruspoli, which offers a different view of the square. Anyone who wants to, may taste the “strawberries of Nemi” and the famous “cake with strawberries.” Continuing to Lanuvio, with its square adorned by the seventeenth-century “fountain of the rocks” and its medieval walls, passing under Genzano and Vallericcia, that was once a lake dried up by the Princess Chigi to cultivate the plain. We’ll cross the lake and continue towards the ancient Ariccia through its hidden alleyways, stopping to admire the Piazza di Corte of Palazzo Chigi, the twin fountains and the church of the Assumption, the whole work of Bernini. We’ll cross the bridge and head to the monumental Albano to stop almost immediately near the tomb called “the Orazi and Curiazi”. Then, a short ride to the lively town with a stop at the two churches of major interest. We’ll leave for Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s summer home, where we’ll stop for photos and lunch. After lunch, we continue to Grottaferrata to visit the ancient Abbey of S.Nile with its beautiful fortified walls. The tour ends in Frascati, where you can enjoy the magnificent square and visit the church of S. Peter with its monumental facade all made of local volcanic stones.

THIRD ITINERARY: Frascati – Monte Porzio Catone – Nemi – Rocca di Papa – Ariccia – Albano – Castel Gandolfo – Marino – Grottaferrata
Created in conjunction with the destruction of the city of Tusculum, Frascati is the closest to Rome and then always favored by the Roman nobility of all time as the site for construction for country houses and summer residences. Witness the famous villas, of which you can enjoy the best behind the main square. Continue to Monte Porzio Catone, city of wine, for a ride around the picturesque streets of the village and perhaps a quick visit to the Museum of Wine Broad. Along the road that runs along the outside of the ancient volcano crater, Latium, we drive to Nemi. The village, beautifully overlooking the lake of the same name in the waters of which were found two beautiful ships attributed to Roman Emperor Caligula, waiting for us with its legends and its delicacies with strawberries. The tour continues with Rocca di Papa, who will surprise us with its special construction, so set against the mountain with the castle on top, which hosted the beginning of the century experiments of Guglielmo Marconi’s radio transmission. We descend from Rocca di Papa and we head to Ariccia, where we can expect a lunch of typical “fraschette” and, refreshed and fascinated by the work of Bernini’s Piazza di Corte, we proceed to Albano, where you’ll be spoiled for choice as regards historical Roman and pre-Roman. Castel Gandolfo is waiting for us, then, with its peace and its breathtaking view of Lake Albano. Marino, penultimate stage for a spin in the country with a very picturesque and interesting story about the battle of Lepanto and we’ll end the trip with a visit to Grottaferrata’s beautiful Abbey, fortified by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere.
