Genzano and his “Infiorata”

The “Infiorata” in Genzano (this year date on 16/17/18 June) is historically linked to the religious celebration of Corpus Christi. The origins of this festival date back to the thirteenth century when, on occasion of the processions, petals were scattered profusely.

In 1625, in the Vatican Basilica, began the tradition of decorating the floor of the church with flowers arranged in a mosaic. This custom spread in many catholic countries. Because of the width and slope of the uphill road which hosts the floral carpet, the one in Genzano is renowned for its beauty and scenography. Throughout the centuries this fest has grown from local folk festival to an international event of art and culture.

The festival, nowadays spread over two weeks, hosts several cultural events: concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances, handcrafts stands, fashion shows.

DOUGHNUT FLUFFY

Back to Marine every therd weekend of October for the festival of the “Ciambella al mosto”. This Marinese typical specialty is a very fluffy doughnut prepared since 1600 for the tables of local nobles. The tradition seemed to have been lost over time, but inside the houses mariners housewives continued to jealously guard the recipe and prepare it for their families. So, a few years ago thanks to the “Consortium for the Protection Specialties Typical” has rekindled interest in this very special cake that is now regularly celebrated with a festival every year. The doughnut to  the must, as its name implies, is prepared with the juice, or wine still in fermentation. This means you can enjoy this speciality  only during the brief time of year when the wine is fermenting, because, when the wine is ready, no more cake.

THE MOST FAMOUS

The most popular festival of the Castelli Romani is undoubtedly the “Wine Festival of Marino.

La fontana dei quattro mori addobbata con i grappoli d'uvaIt takes place the first weekend of October. The main phases of the celebration are the solemn procession, the parade, the miracle of the fountains that “give wine”, the distribution of grapes and wine in the streets of the village, the sight of the flag. The procession recalls the historic event took place in Rome on 4 December 1571, when Pope Pius V wanted  to be bestowed to Marcantonio Colonna, Lord of Marino, who  had given command of the papal fleet in the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks, same great honor reserved in ancient Rome to the bravest generals. Marcantonio Colonna was in fact distinguished courage and ability to contribute decisively to the victory of the Holy League against the forces of the Ottoman Empire. By the same historical event gave rise to the religious festival of thanksgiving to the Virgin of Victory – then the SS.Rosario – under whose protection the Pope had placed naval expedition. The procession and the festival are therefore both “historical” as originating from the same event.

PANE E ARTISTI
